An SAG member from the private sector is Dr. Nancy Dayap. She obtained her doctoral degree in Environmental Science with Marine Science as cognate from the University of the Philippines in Los Baños. While employed at BFAR she held various assignments: NSAP project leader, Fish Health Laboratory Manager, AMIA focal person are just among the more significant ones. However, multitasking was not a problem for her because she still managed to turn in high-quality outputs as some of her research work garnered best paper awards, and not only that, she was also recognized by the DA Region 8 with a GAWAD SAKA special citation as an outstanding researcher for Fisheries in 2017.
“Retired but not tired” – aside from consultancies, she reviews research manuscripts for publication in an international journal. Currently, she is the appointed Professional Lecturer of the Department of Natural Science and Mathematics at the University of the Philippines Visayas (Tacloban campus) and a Guest Lecturer of the Department of Fisheries at Visayas State University – Tolosa.
Janine is an alumna of University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College (UPVTC) with a degree in Biology. She previously worked as a Research Assistant at UPVTC and helped in thr rehabilitation of livelihood of distraught fisherfolks in Leyte after Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) through seaweed farming in 2014. She has been part of the expansion and diversification of production and management systems for sea cucumbers in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Northern Australia in partnership with Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) in 2015-2017. She is now working as a Research Associate at Guiuan Development Foundation, Inc (GDFI) which operates in the 7 coastal municipalities of Eastern Samar from Lawaan to Guiuan. This organization focuses on community work and environmental research to bridging the gap between science, policy and community. Her work now mainly involves extending technical support to facilitate the community-based sea cucumber production in EV. She is also involved in conducting number of trainings on Participatory Marine Protected Area Assessment and Monitoring and was even part of the 2019 Participatory Resource and SocioEconomic Assessment (PRSA) conducted by UPVTC in collaboration with BFAR – 8.
Diovanie is currently a Campaign and Science Specialist of Oceana handling the Sardines/FMA campaigns. He joined Oceana in 2018 as a Marine Scientist, providing scientific technical inputs to Oceana’s campaigns. His previous research work experience at the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP MSI) enabled him to conduct studies about coral reef ecosystems and expeditions in the Philippine Rise, Tubbataha and Tawi-Tawi among others; help with the management of the Philippines’ Marine Protected Areas and fisheries; and assist in the plans for the Coral Triangle Initiative. He got his MS Marine Science major in Marine Biology and BS Biology from the University of the Philippines Diliman.
Gregorio has been one of the marine ecologist of Haribon Foundation since 2006 and is currently managing the Conservation Science and Research Department. He has been involved in marine protected area management, participatory action research and traditional fishers knowledge in the past nineteen years. He has underwent certificate training courses on fish taxonomy with Kent Carpenter as well as coral taxonomy under Dr. Al Licuanan of DLSU. He has managed the SMARTSeas Project for Lanuza Bay, Surigao del Sur as implemented by DENR.
Jimely works in the different fields of science that concerns the oceans and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with communities and markets with focus on stock and environmental assessment. She is a passionate advocate on the use of credible science as foundation of policies towards genuine fisheries management and responsible governance. Currently, she is a Policy and Science Consultant of the Environmental Defense Fund. Her works revolved around mentoring science workers of the NSAP of the BFAR and the NFRDI, provide science support for some EDF Philippines Civil Society Organizations, and works on policy reforms for fisheries management in the Philippines.
Susana is a graduate of Fisheries in VSU Tolosa Campus with flying colors. She has worked briefly in a fish trading company in Catbalogan, Samar then proceeded to work in the government as an elected public servant from 1997-2010. She is now the Agricultural Technologist for Fisheries of the LGU of Tanauan and has been our partner in the implementation of the Bureau’s programs in the LGU like the Community Fish Landing Centers, OPLAN TOKHANG, OPLAN MATA (Masid and SITA) together with our law enforcement team, and in the distribution of livelihood assistance to our fisherfolks, among others.
Shereen is a fisheries graduate and a masters degree holder in Ocean Sciences (Biological Sciences). She is a licensed and registered fisheries technologist. As her master’s thesis, she worked on oil spill toxicity in seaweeds. She now teaches professional and elective courses in both BS and MS Fisheries programs at the Visayas State University (Tolosa Campus). Moreover, she also serves as a thesis adviser on undergraduate thesis related to reproductive biology of fishes and stock assessment.
Prof. Teresita C. Jocson is an Associate Professor III of the Visayas State University-Tolosa. She completed her BS Fisheries (Inland Fisheries) in 1980 (Cum Laude) from the Daniel Z. Romualdez Memorial School of Fisheries, Tolosa, Leyte. Right after graduation she worked directly and was hired as Sec. School Teacher in the same school where she graduated. In 1992 she finished her MS Fisheries (Aquaculture) at the University of the Philippines in the Visayas, Miag-ao, Iloilo. She pursued her Ph.D. Fisheries (Aquaculture) in the same university in 1997 and completed the Academic Requirements (CAR) of the program.
Prof. Jocson rose from the ranks, she held the post as Head, Research and Extension; Head, Dept. of Fisheries from 2009-2016, wherein VSU-Tolosa was awarded the National University/College of Fisheries (NUCF) in the region, by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) thru the National Agriculture/Fisheries Education System (NAFES). She also was Head of the Academic Affairs in 2016; OIC Dean/Dean of VSU-Tolosa in 2016-2017. Currently, she is the Dean, College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, at the same time as Head, Dept. of Fisheries. Prof. Jocson is forty (40) years in service as of date.
Nonita is a senior aquaculturist in the Bureau and currently in charge of two research centers in the Region: i.e. BFAR Guiuan Marine Fisheries Development Center and NFRDI – Marine Fisheries Research and Development Center in Guiuan, Eastern Samar. She has been involved in research projects on spiny lobster, blue swimming crabs, sea cucumber, scallops and mangrove crabs.
A team of dedicated individuals trained personally by the pioneers in stock assessment and the most progressive fisheries science minds in the country. NSAP is a nation-wide program that forms the core of fisheries stock assessment for the country’s FMAs. They are responsible for collection and analysis of fisheries data to develop information and knowledge that fishery managers and decision-makers use for sustainable, science-based management of the country’s fisheries resources.

more than 10 years of experience in the field. In 2011 he started with his
Whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) and Milkfish or Bangus (Chanos chanos)
grow-out culture. And in 2014 he founded one of the most active cooperatives
in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, the Cantilan Fish Cage and Fishpond Agriculture
Cooperative which now has 30 members. Through Mr. Azarcon, the said
cooperative was able to avail the Bangus Production and Marketing project
under the Department of Agriculture – Philippine Rural Development (DA-PRDP)
